What is Prehab? Is that even a real word?

Now if you’re a patient of mine and you have gotten through your initial care plan and are finally pain-free and feeling alive again! You may have heard me use the term prehab or prehabilitation. And if you are one of those people who think that isn’t a real word, well let me just tell you that it is a term often used by medical doctors but my meaning varies from theirs slightly.

Prior to some major surgeries, surgeons will advise some prehabilitation. An article in the Clinical Medicine Journal states that prehabilitation is, “a preparation of individuals to ‘weather the storm’ of their [surgical] operation and to avoid or overcome complications.”Basically what this means is that you are preparing your body through exercise, therapy, lifestyle changes, nutrition, counseling, and a host of other interventions to prepare your body for the trauma of surgery. This has shown to improve the outcomes of patients who undergo certain major surgeries. This is great and should be applied to every patient who is undergoing surgery!

But maybe this issue of prehab should be applied to patients in order to avoid surgery all together! That’s where my meaning of the word prehabilitation comes in, I tell patients this all the time to educate them on their bodies and what their bodies need in order to avoid injury in the future. So not just prepare the body for surgery but prepare the body for life. Prepare the body in order to avoid surgeries all together. Prepare the body to be the healthiest and most optimally functional it can be!

Chiropractic Care and Prehab

            Chiropractic care as a whole is an alternative form of medicine that has shown time and time again and has been highly researched to show that many different conditions can be helped through Chiropractic care and avoid drugs and surgery all together. Here at inTune we use the word Prehab to mean we are prepping and preparing the body to avoid injury.

            If you came in initially with an injury and we have been able to help that injury we will then prehab the body in order to avoid that injury from ever occurring again. By adjusting and soft tissue work paired with home exercises/stretches we can train the body to be healthy and resilient.

Why Wait?

            We are always talking to people who say they have been in pain for months to even years, and we always ask, “why did you wait so long?” It may seem like it is an easy question but in reality most people just feel like they are too busy to take care of their body or they heard non-sense like Chiropractic is witchcraft or doesn’t work. We have been able to show all of these people that all of that just is not true!

            But just think about something for a second…why would you wait for an injury to occur when there is a safe, effective, and non-expesnive way to avoid injury all together? You would say “yeah I would do that to avoid getting hurt.” But 9 times out of 10 people do not want to come in to the Chiropractor and help themselves. Chiropractors are not just neck pain and back pain doctors, it may seem like that because we see a lot of those issues but that is because people wait to come in until they are injured and some even wait months to years after they have been injured to finally do something about.
